Havan at Your Wedding: Are Sacred Fires Allowed in Venues?

5 minute read · Updated 15 October 2026

For many Hindu ceremonies the sacred fire is central. But venues vary a great deal in what they allow. Finding out early can change which venue, which mandap and which layout you choose.

What venues typically say

Policies are set by each venue and by local fire safety requirements. In general, you'll find three positions:

  • Allowed with conditions. A contained havan kund is permitted if arranged in advance, often with set positions, extinguishers or a named responsible person.
  • Allowed in certain areas. For example, an outdoor space, covered terrace or specific hall only.
  • Not permitted. Some venues, particularly hotels with strict fire policies, do not allow open flames indoors at all.

What to ask your venue

  1. Is a havan or sacred fire allowed, and where?
  2. Do you need notice, a risk assessment or particular insurance?
  3. Are there restrictions on size, fuel or smoke?
  4. Do smoke or heat detectors need to be disabled or protected, and who arranges that?
  5. Can we put the answer in writing?

How it affects your mandap

A havan changes the layout. You need floor space for the kund, safe clearance from drapes and florals, and sufficient ceiling height for heat and smoke. Fabric-heavy or fresh floral designs need particular care.

  • Tell us in your enquiry that a havan is planned
  • Ask for a layout that keeps the fire clear of decoration
  • Consider a design with more structural than fabric elements if space is tight

Havan outdoors and in windy weather

An open flame outdoors needs extra care. Wind can blow flames, smoke and drapes toward guests, and rain can put the fire out. Keep the kund well clear of fabric and florals, ask your venue and priest about a sheltered position, and agree an indoor or covered alternative if the weather turns.

If your venue doesn't allow a flame

Some couples use alternatives such as a symbolic arrangement or a ceremony in a permitted outdoor space. Speak to your priest and venue about options that respect the tradition and the rules.

Quick answers

Are sacred fires (havan) permitted inside wedding venues?

Rules vary by venue and local fire safety requirements. Many venues allow a contained havan kund if arranged in advance, some require a fire-safety plan or specific setup, and some do not permit open flames at all. Ask your venue early and put their answer in writing before choosing your mandap and layout.

Who coordinates the mandap installation with the venue?

Your supplier normally liaises with the venue on access times, parking, load-in route and any rules. Tell us your venue's events manager contact in the enquiry and we'll pass it on. You should still confirm your own timings with the venue so everyone is working to the same plan.

Can a mandap be installed outdoors?

Yes, in gardens and marquees as well as halls, but outdoors carries extra risk. The main ones are wind, rain, strong sun and soft or uneven ground. The usual solutions are a marquee or covered area, anchoring and weighting the structure, a level stage, weather-proof carpeting and an agreed indoor back-up. Tell us your site and we will plan around it.
