Fresh vs Artificial Flowers on a Mandap

6 minute read · Updated 15 October 2026

Flowers do much of the work on a mandap, so the fresh versus artificial question matters. The honest answer is that neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on your venue, your date, your timeline and what you want from the photographs.

Fresh flowers: the case for

  • Natural scent, softness and variation that photograph beautifully
  • A genuinely seasonal, organic feel
  • Often the preference for smaller, intimate ceremonies

Things to consider

  • Cost is usually higher, particularly for large installations
  • Delicate blooms can wilt in warm rooms, with candle heat or in direct sun
  • You're limited to what's in season and available on your date
  • Installation is typically close to the ceremony for freshness

Artificial flowers: the case for

  • Consistent colour and fullness that doesn't change on the day
  • Can be installed earlier, which helps with tight venue schedules
  • Cope well with heat, wind and long days
  • Reusable, which can keep price more predictable

Things to consider

  • Quality varies enormously. Good-quality work is convincing; poor quality is obvious up close
  • No natural scent
  • Less variation than natural flowers

Flowers and the weather

If your ceremony is outdoors, the weather matters as much as the look. Strong sun and heat wilt fresh flowers quickly, rain can damage delicate blooms, and wind can strip or move lightweight arrangements. Artificial flowers cope best, while fresh flowers need shade, late installation and a replacement plan. Our guide to outdoor mandap risks covers wind, rain and heat in more detail.

What about a mix?

Many designs combine a structure with artificial base florals and a few fresh accents, giving the fullness of one and the softness of the other. It's a practical way to balance look, budget and timing.

Can you change the colours and flowers?

Usually, within limits. Drape-and-floral designs are the most flexible. Heavily structural designs such as carved or crystal pieces change less. Tell us your colour scheme and we'll say what's realistic and whether it affects the price.

Questions to ask your supplier

  1. Is the design on the listing fresh, artificial or a mix?
  2. What does switching cost?
  3. Which flowers are in season on my date?
  4. How early can installation take place?
  5. What happens if a flower isn't available?

Quick answers

What is the difference between fresh and artificial flowers on a mandap?

Fresh flowers have natural scent and texture but are costlier, weather-sensitive and fixed to what's in season. Artificial flowers are reusable, consistent in colour, can be installed days ahead and handle warm halls or outdoor use well. Good artificial work looks convincing in photos. Ask which is used on the design you like, and the cost difference.

Can I customise the colours and flowers on my mandap?

Usually, yes, within limits. Many designs can have the colours of the florals changed to match your theme. Heavily structural designs, such as carved or crystal pieces, change less than drape-and-floral styles. Tell us your colour scheme in the enquiry and we'll say what's realistic and whether it affects the price.

How do I protect flowers and decor in hot or wet weather?

Artificial flowers cope best with heat, wind and rain. Fresh flowers can wilt in strong sun or warm marquees, so they are best installed close to the ceremony and kept shaded. Shelter, shade, waterproof carpet or boards over wet grass, and keeping drapes secured all help. If you want fresh blooms outdoors, ask for a sturdy design and a plan for replacing anything damaged.
