Traditional vs Modern Mandap: How to Choose Style and Size

7 minute read · Updated 15 October 2026

Choosing a mandap is partly about taste and partly about practicalities. This guide helps you decide on style and size, so you can narrow dozens of options down to a short list that genuinely suits you.

Traditional mandaps

Typically carved or ornate, with defined pillars, gold or warm tones and a strong sense of ceremony. They often suit larger, formal weddings and families who want a classic look.

  • Common features: carved panels, pillars, a pavilion or dome, rich colours
  • Best for: formal ceremonies, larger halls, traditional themes
  • Consider: structural, so colour and layout change less than with drape styles

Modern mandaps

Cleaner lines, drapes, greenery, acrylic or sculptural floral frames. They tend to suit contemporary venues, marquees and couples who want the ceremony to feel fresh.

  • Common features: white or neutral drapes, floral arches, glass or crystal accents, foliage
  • Best for: modern halls, outdoor and garden settings, smaller guest lists
  • Consider: more flexible on colour, and florals do much of the visual work

Structure types

  • Round canopy. A dome or circular roof on pillars; commanding and photogenic, but needs space and height.
  • Square frame. A four-post frame with drapes or florals; adaptable and compact.
  • Four-pillar pavilion. A more formal structure with a defined roof.
  • Arch or ring. A single sculptural feature; modern and light.
  • Stage backdrop. A decorated wall behind the ceremony; space-efficient.

Choosing the right size

Think about three things: who sits on the stage (couple, priest, parents, grandparents), how many guests need to see, and the room itself.

  • Compact. Suits intimate ceremonies and smaller rooms.
  • Medium. A flexible choice for most halls.
  • Large. Gives presence in bigger rooms and more space on stage.
  • Grand. Statement scale; needs generous floor space and ceiling height.

Measure your floor space and ceiling height, noting chandeliers and beams. A design that looks perfect online can feel overwhelming or lost if it doesn't suit the room. Every listing on our site has a size guide, and our advisers will check fit against your venue.

Can I see the real thing first?

Photos show real installations, but each one is adapted to its venue. Ask your adviser for more photos of the exact design or to arrange a viewing if you want to be sure.

Quick answers

What is the difference between a traditional and modern mandap?

A traditional mandap is typically carved or ornate, with pillars, gold tones and a strong religious feel. A modern mandap leans on clean lines, drapes, greenery, acrylic or sculptural floral frames. Neither is better. Traditional suits larger, formal ceremonies; modern often suits contemporary venues. You can filter by style on our mandaps page.

What size mandap do I need for my wedding?

Think about how many people sit on the stage (couple, priest, parents), your guest count and the room. Compact designs suit intimate ceremonies; large and grand designs need more floor space and ceiling height. Each listing shows a size guide. Your adviser will check your venue measurements before confirming.

Can I see the actual mandap before booking?

Photos on our site are real examples of installations, but each setup is adapted to its venue. Many suppliers can share more photos of the exact design, and some offer a viewing at their warehouse or a showroom. Ask your adviser to arrange extra images or a viewing before you commit.
