Mandap Hire for a Marquee: What to Check Before Booking

Updated 21 October 2026

Mandap hire for a marquee works best when you confirm the internal height, pole positions, flooring, power and access before you choose a design. Marquees look flexible, but they have fixed limits that a mandap must fit inside. This guide gives you a practical list to run through with both your marquee company and your mandap supplier.

Why is mandap hire for a marquee different from a hall?

A hall or hotel suite has a fixed ceiling, a hard floor and built-in power. A marquee has none of these guaranteed. Its height changes across the roof, its floor may be temporary, and its power comes from generators or a nearby supply. The mandap, which is a tall and fairly heavy structure, has to work within all of that.

The good news is that marquees are often roomy, and many families choose them precisely because they can hold large guest lists. The key is planning the layout early, because moving a pole or a stage is much easier on paper than on the morning of the wedding.

Check the height and pole positions

Marquee roofs peak in the middle and slope down towards the sides, so the clear height depends on where you stand. Ask the marquee company for the internal height at the centre, at the sides, and at the exact spot you want the mandap.

Poles are the second issue. Some marquees have central poles that fall right where you might want the ceremony space. Frame marquees avoid this, but they still have beams and lighting rigs. Ask for a scaled floor plan that marks every pole, then place the mandap, stage and aisle on it before choosing a design. Our guide to space, ceiling height and outdoor weddings covers measuring in more depth.

Flooring and ground

A mandap needs a stable, level base. If the marquee stands on grass, ask whether it will have a floor laid, and whether that floor is firm and flat where the heavy items will sit. Slopes, soft ground and gaps between floor panels are all worth flagging.

Also think about the aisle and stage. Carpet and an aisle surface are usually optional extras at the lowest prices and are often included in larger packages, depending on location. Confirm which applies to your quote rather than assuming.

Linings, drapes and colour

The inside of the marquee becomes the backdrop to every photograph. A plain pale lining lets the mandap carry the colour, while a busy lining competes with it. If you like a floral or foliage-heavy design such as the rose and foliage white mandap, a calm background will make it look richer.

Photographs of the ceremony will show a good deal of this backdrop, so it deserves a decision early rather than a rushed one a week before. If your families have strong colour preferences, check them against the lining before you finalise anything.

Ask whether the marquee company can drape or swag the lining behind the stage, and whether any of that decor is already included in their price. That avoids paying twice for the same backdrop.

Power and lighting

Lighting can transform a mandap, and it is also a common source of confusion. Check whether the marquee has a generator, how many sockets are available near the ceremony space, and who supplies any extra lighting. If your chosen design includes lights, tell the supplier where power will be and how far cables must run.

Also ask who is responsible if a socket fails or a light trips the supply. Having a named electrician or marquee contact on site during the ceremony is a small step that can save a stressful few minutes. If the ceremony includes a havan, tell the marquee company too, since fire inside a marquee has its own considerations and our guide to havan and fire rules at venues explains what to ask.

Weather, wind and access

Even inside a marquee, weather matters. Wind can move poles and fabric, and heavy rain can affect the ground and the sound inside. Light hanging fabric and tall slim frames need more thought than sturdy pavilions. Ask each supplier how they cope with poor conditions.

Access is the other practical point. Mandap pieces arrive in sections and need a clear route in. Check the width of the entrance, any steps or uneven ground, and where a vehicle can park. If the garden is a long walk from the road, tell the supplier, because it affects the time and crew needed.

Timing with the marquee company

The mandap cannot go in until the floor, lining and stage are ready, and the marquee company will often be setting up other items too. Agree a clear order of work and a realistic finish time before the ceremony starts. Our guide to setup and dismantle times explains how to plan this, and the venue FAQs cover related questions.

A marquee mandap checklist

  1. Get the marquee floor plan with all poles and the internal height marked.
  2. Measure the height and footprint at the exact mandap position.
  3. Confirm the flooring type and whether it is level and firm.
  4. Check the lining colour and any drapes behind the stage.
  5. Agree the power supply, sockets and who provides lighting.
  6. Plan for wind and rain with both suppliers.
  7. Check load-in access, steps and parking.
  8. Agree the setup order and finish time in writing.
  9. Name one person on the day who coordinates both suppliers.

Choosing a design that suits a marquee

Sturdy, well-anchored structures usually cope better with marquee conditions than very light ones, though many fabric designs work well with a sensible plan. The floral drape outdoor mandap and manor lawn white drape mandap are examples worth looking at. For a wider view of shapes, see our guide to mandap structures.

If something goes wrong, it is usually a communication gap, not a faulty design. Our guide to what can go wrong with mandap hire lists the common ones. Our guide prices start from £1,495, and your exact price depends on location, requirements and time on site, confirmed in your quote.

When you are ready, browse the mandap collection, save your favourites to compare, and request a quote with your marquee details so the supplier can plan around them.

Quick answers

Who should tell the mandap supplier about the marquee layout?

You or your planner should, ideally with the marquee company's plan in hand. Send the floor plan, internal height and pole positions with your enquiry. The two suppliers should also speak directly, so everyone agrees where the mandap, stage and walkways go.

Can a mandap be set up on grass inside a marquee?

It is possible if the marquee has flooring laid first, but the surface must be firm and level. Soft or sloping ground can make a heavy frame unsafe. Ask the supplier what they need and confirm that the marquee company is laying suitable flooring.

Do marquee linings and drapes clash with the mandap?

They can. A heavily patterned or strongly coloured lining competes with the mandap decor, while a plain white or cream lining usually lets it stand out. Share lining samples or photos with the mandap supplier before you finalise colours.

What happens if it rains or the wind picks up?

A properly pitched marquee protects the mandap, but wind can still stress poles and light fabric. Ask both suppliers about their wet and windy weather plans, and avoid designs with loose hanging details if exposure is a concern. Nobody can promise the weather.
